How to choose your bike brakes?

The hydraulic disc brake (e.g. BR-MT200) offers the best power, fine modulation and low lever wear, especially in the rain and downhill; the mechanical (cable) disc is easier to adjust, and rim pads remain economical. Brake pads come in resin (quiet, quick bite) or metallic/sintered (long-lasting, ideal in the mountains and in wet weather). Check caliper compatibility, disc diameter and lever type. A hydraulic system needs periodic bleeding to keep all its bite.

Frequently asked questions

Hydraulic or mechanical disc brake?

Hydraulic offers more power, better modulation and less lever effort, ideal for MTB and descents. Mechanical (cable) is simpler to adjust and maintain. Hydraulic remains superior in performance.

Resin or metallic brake pads?

Resin pads are quiet and bite quickly, perfect in dry weather; metallic (sintered) ones last longer and cope better with heat and moisture, ideal in the mountains and in the rain.

When should you bleed hydraulic brakes?

Bleed them when the lever feels spongy, the travel long or the bite weak, generally once a year depending on use. Bleeding removes air from the circuit and restores firm, precise braking.
